I didn't know Guanajuato made such good wine.

“I really didn't know what to expect. My friend told me ‘let's go to Guanajuato to visit vineyards’ and I thought: 'Guanajuato produces wine? Well, yes, and a good one.

What I liked the most was that they don't make you feel bad if you don't know anything. At the tasting, the winemaker explained everything from scratch: why the wine smells of things, how to taste it, what terroir means. I was just tasting and saying ‘yes, it tastes like something’.

The scenery is something else. Being there among the vines, with the mountains in the background, having a drink while watching the sunset. Super instagrammable, but also very cool in person.

I already told my mom that we have to go for her birthday. And I used to drink wine only when I got it as a gift. Now I have my favorite varietal.”

It reminded me of why I started to love wine.

“He has been visiting vineyards for twenty years. I have been to La Rioja, Mendoza, Napa Valley. When I was invited to Guanajuato, I was skeptical. I thought: I know what I'm going to find.

I was wrong.

The Independence Valley has something very much its own. The altitude, the semi-arid climate, the soils. It shows in the glass. I tasted a Cabernet Sauvignon that had nothing to ask of a high altitude wine from Argentina. Structure, well-integrated tannins, good acidity.

But what impressed me the most was the people. In other regions everything is already very corporate, very produced. Here you still talk with the winemaker, with the owner of the vineyard. They tell you how they started, what challenges they faced, what they are looking for. You can feel the passion.

I already told my sommelier in CDMX to get me wines from Guanajuato. And I'm already planning to return for the next vintage.”
